it is monsoon season.
technically, it has been since we arrived, but finally the rains have errupted.
no amount of foul weather gear will keep you dry, but i've always said that being dry is highly overrated (think of a dry wedding, for example, where's the fun in that?)
i was in hong kong for its monsoon season as well.
i don't know if you knew: but Nepal is strapped for cash. I mean, we are talking 12th poorest country in the world status (a factoid for your next dinner party, you intellectual snob.) Hong Kong is not the 12th poorest country, it's not even a country, its an SAR, but its got its finances pretty much in order. These are things you already knew; I'm just framing the story for you.
there's a difference in monsoon seasons between here and hk, i'll tell you why:
1. here, we are thankful for the rain. with the rising cost of food and the inability of local farmers to farm due to drought-like circumstances, finally there might be more of a harvest.
2. the streets are dangerously narrow here to begin with. now, with rivers flowing down either side of the streets there are fewer places to step your foot when a bus is kareening toward you. sure there are puddles in the kong too- but they are clean puddles, and there are novelties such as sidewalks!
3. sanitation here is, well, its lacking. so that puddle that i was referring to earlier looks muddy, but is it actually mud? or is it poop? yes, poop is an academic term.
all i'm saying is i felt a difference. one thing's for certain: my hair doesn't care about economics. it reacts in the same naughty manner in both rich and poor countries: fit to be tied (back in a ponytail holder).

gee.... that sounds like a terrific vacation spot for me in the future.. are there bugs too? I love to see a pile of poop with bugs swarming on top of it in the sweltering heat. Go ahead, stay there....

Today was beautiful and sunny down here in HK. I had the day off in celebration of the Re-Unification with the Homeland Day.
It has rained significantly, though, and the term "clean puddles" is rather generous for this polluted metropolis.
OMG...(like my use of text acronyms?)Anyway, saw a food network special on the clinton street bakery. U must eat there for pancakes when u return. it is possible we should have waited 2 hrs. nepal sounds like florida.
Susan: Yes there are bugs. And the flies love the cow shit lining the streets.
Taylor: People brush the sidewalks in Hong Kong; there are no trash cans in Kathmandu. I stand by my claim.
